Evolving into a Hipper Barb After Closet Cleanout

It's been mentioned several times recently that it's been a minute since my last blog post. It's true and I have little excuse for that other than the fact that it's been an incredibly beautiful summer here in Chicago.

While fires were burning and temps sweltering in other parts of the country, Chicago was blessed with an incredible summer. I'm sure we will pay the price in January, but summer is our time to shine and I contend no city matches Chicago in summer.

"But it's October, Barb."

Yes, I am aware but the weather is still great so I am taking advantage of it until I can't. In addition, as I have said it before: blogging is something I do for enjoyment so if there is fun to be had elsewhere outside, it's probably not happening. I also have the maturity level of a 20 something so making myself do anything I don't want to do is...well problematic.

But I'm back!

New Season, New Style

When I moved to Chicago, I was so overwhelmed with the logistics of it all that I never took the time to properly go through my clothes so everything was boxed up and brought.  Sure, it would have been an ideal time to shed some never-worn items, but see above 👆about making myself do things that are not fun...It could wait.

So, nine years later, I decided it was time to do something about it. I decided to hire a stylist to come and assist me in going through my closet and purging any items that are outdated, worn or no longer fit.  I needed someone, besides my daughter, to shoot it straight and provide a much-needed reality check on my wardrobe.

Above is the outfit I picked out to wear to my 40th class reunion.

I researched a few, found one who was pretty close, relatively affordable, so I reached out via email.

I have described my wardrobe as "schlubby chic" and I think that still holds true. I haven't worked in an office since the late 90s so my professional attire is sadly lacking. My typical work outfit is sweats and a hoodie, but as a grown-up, I was realizing that I possibly needed a style update.

I wear a lot of casual leisurewear and I own more hoodies than most teenaged boys. Pulling my sweats out in the fall is one of my favorite seasonal rituals. So comfortable, warm, inviting and never judgemental about weight loss. They are the All Stars of my wardrobe, if I'm being honest.

At dinner that night, I told Laura about the plan. She is typically my in-house fashion consultant so she is more aware that I needed help. She has been telling me for years that I needed to pare down.

A week later, I finally got back to the stylist, Lora, to schedule a day for her to come and dive in. As she was looking at her calendar, she said, "Do you have a daughter named Laura?" I told her I did, but was super confused as to why she was asking.

Yep, you guessed it. Laura indeed thought it was an excellent idea, such a good one, in fact, that she decided to do the same and independently found the same stylist! Small world.

Initially I was annoyed; she totally had snuck in and stole my thunder. Then as the days went on, Laura started dropping little hints like "Lora (the stylist) doesn't like flannels.." What??? An internal panic set in.

I also saw the 12 bags of clothes that the stylist had already ousted from Laura's closet so knew this woman was going to mean business.

Hmmm, so Lora doesn't like flannels, what else might she dislike? I'm guessing she probably is also not a fan of concert tees, the second most common and beloved clothing items in my closet. Considering I want to be buried with those, I had to make sure she was never going to get her hands on those!

Must hide all concert tees. Check. ✅

Then I started thinking of my favorite hoodies. My favorite is from Purgatory Mountain, the ski area we grew up skiing in Colorado. It's faded, logo is barely visible, and it's decades-old. It's pretty awful looking and also my absolute fav. I knew enough of this stylist to realize it was not safe.

Favorite hoodies also safely hidden. Check. ✅

The mental wheels came off the bus with this shocker: Laura casually mentioned one day that the stylist told her that scarves were out of fashion, I literally gasped. What? How do mature women hide our sagging "turkey" necks without proper scarfing?

I recently had the great fortune of spending time with my girlfriends at my 40th high school reunion in St. Louis. I shared this rather disturbing fashion news about scarves with them during a lunch date, and they all collectively gasped with their hands instinctively covering their necks. WHAT????

So, you can see where this is going...Scarves now also safely stowed away. ✅

Did I question the logic of hiding my clothes from the woman I was paying to advise me on fashion? Sure, I did. But, my love of these items exceeded any logic on the matter.

Then Laura would say things like, "she's probably going to hurt your feelings."

So, now with full-blown anxiety and clothes safely stashed throughout my house, the stylist arrived. I put on my nicest sweatpants and hoodie, which she deemed acceptable, calling it "casual, but elevated casual."

I heard that a lot. She was kind though and let me keep a few things, most of which she described this way: "I don't hate this." Cool. That meant, it could stay.

I can work with that.

Lora immediately tackled my closet, then after a couple of hours, she came in and asked where my dresses were. I froze. Oh no, I had not vetted that closet! It was too late though. That was where she discovered my secondary stash of shoes too.

I'm sure you all want to know what I learned as a result of this rather humbling experience. Well, for one, I learned that I am apparently I am a shoe hoarder. I had no idea. I guess the first step in recovery is admitting you have a problem.

There were signs.

I have a lovely Guatemalan housekeeper who barely speaks English although she has saved nearly every houseplant I own. She discovered my second closet with my hidden shoe stash a few years ago and came in with two pairs in her hands, shaking her head and saying, "Dis...is no good, Bar-barrr-a." Enough said.

What's particularly hilarious is that now that I walk everywhere, I wear the same 3-4 pairs of shoes every day. Tragically, a few of the pairs that I wear daily were at the bottom of that pile! I told her that she would have to pry my All Birds out of my cold dead hands before I would ever part with them. I think she caught my vibe. There were a few other pairs I fought for, but overall, it does feel great to have less.

Less shoes, less clothes in general. My closet is now incredibly organized and I get dressed in a snap because I have so few options now!

The next step is Lora comes back and will help me create outfits with what's left of my wardrobe. I will keep you all posted as I evolve into a much more sophisticated, hip Barb.

Good grief, this got long so perhaps I will wrap this up!

I hope this blog finds you all happy and well. I hope you all enjoying the "Tripartite" (Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas) season. We all know you blink this time of year and it's the holidays so let me be the first to say Happy Holidays!

Avoid malls and Home Goods.  Shop online. You heard it here first.

Be well and until next time,

Barb

Summer 2022: Sticky Floors, Dirty Clothes and an Empty Fridge

Greetings, everyone, and my apologies for my rather prolonged absense from blogging. I've been on a legit tear all summer, squeezing every ounce of fun out of every weekend. My normally regimented, get-things-done approach to the weekend has been replaced by a devil-may-care attitude that's left me with an absolutely filthy house with sticky floors, no food, and piles of dirty laundry.

Laura moved out three weeks ago and I've yet to be to the grocery store since. Fortunately my local Citgo gas station has kept me supplied with milk and bananas. You would be surprised how long a dozen eggs, a few bananas and a jar of peanut butter can get keep you alive. Basically I've been living on leftovers all summer. Laura stopped in this week and took a peak in my refrigerator and gave me a rather disapproving look. Hey, who has the time for grocery shopping?

Laundry is another chore that's fallen off my list. You know it's bad when you start digging through your drawers and start seeing underwear you haven't seen in decades. Last week things got so bad that my only options were the oddly colored panties or my uncomfortable-but-sexy lingerie.

So I sit here in my magenta granny panties to write this much-overdue blog post with beer still in my hair from Lollapolooza, my ears still ringing and adrenaline still coursing through me from Green Day's epic closing set, I can say it's been one hell of a summer!

The beer, by the way, was mine, as much as I would love to blame some drunk Gen-Z'er. It was from my open beer can that I logically thought I could put in the side pocket of my backpack while I used the dreaded porta-potty. Actually worked great right up until I bent down to see if there was toilet paper and it poured down my back and into my hair. Damn my kitten-sized bladder...and gravity!

Spent a lot of time on the beach, some nice bike rides, played a lot of tennis, had several girlfriends visit, but it's definitely been a summer of music for me. I've been buying concert tickets like a drunken sailor so yes, I have seen a lot of shows. With no one to say no, I'm finding myself unable--or perhaps unwilling--to not go to every concert I possibly can.

This carefree attitude has extended to my dating life. I'm dating all the guys. I mean not literally but fully embracing the "why not" mentality has opened the door to some interesting candidates. Not sure actual keepers but has certainly made for a fun, busy and interesting summer.

The Summer of "Why Not?"

One we'll call Biker Boy, who has tattoos and does not own a car, just a Triumph motorcycle. He does, however, live on the beach--a bonus! I balked at the idea of riding on the motorcycle initially until I realized they can park those things anywhere, making it highly advantageous in getting around a very congested city. While it's been fun, I think biker boys and convertibles are the same; fun in the summer but lose their luster once the weather turns, also known as the other seven months of the year here in Chicago.

With my newly emblazened, devil-may-care dating attitude, I went out with his several times before I noticed he noted he was "non-vanilla" on his dating profile. I had somehow missed this. I will define since I'm going to assume that the lion's share of you have no idea what that means. Non-vanilla means they have some type of sexual fetish. Yikes, I know.

Not being a coward though, and also thinking this might be great material for my book, I thought why not? See the trend here? What was the fetish? One night he came out with a bottle of lotion and a towel. Go time, I assume. He gave me a great foot massage so I thought, "ok, it's a foot fetish" not at all sure what that would entail but also now buckled in for the ride. Felt good, but alas that was not it.

So after dancing around the question for several dates, he finally confessed that he was a dominant. Hmmm. Without missing a beat, I told him my rapper name was "Bossy by Nature" so I wasn't sure I could roll with this. He insisted there would be no pain, no spanking, etc. as he is not a dominatrix but then there was talk of restraints and he did ask me to pick a safe word, which is when things stalled out. It had to start with a P. Pickles? Pineapple? Picnic? Being a writer, how could I possibly narrow it down?

I also dated another golfer, God help me. As you remember from "Golf, the Cruel Mistress of Summer," they are never my first pick, especially in the summer, but he's super sweet and my age so I decided again, why not? Since I've been trying (not always successfully 😉) to date guys my age, I've come to the rather grim realization that all men my age either have a gut issue, a bum ticker or a bad back.

Poor golfer dude has two of the three; back issues that prevent him from walking long distances and had open heart surgery to unclog four of his arteries last year. No way, this guy can keep up with me, although I'm not sure if it's my hyperactivity or diet that will kill him first. Perhaps fortunately (for him), golfer guy is moving back to the suburbs next weekend so the ending of that chapter has been written. Long-distance relationships never work. Next!

Then there was a Rich Dude. It always seems intriguing to date a wealthy guy; they typically live in McMansions and drive fancy cars. This one had a big house in Chicago and an apartment in New York City. Initially it seemed worthy of a summer fling as the idea of a few fun weekends in the big Apple sounded interesting.

This summer he took me to an art show. Apparently he's a collector because the artists all knew him and were laser-focused on kissing his ass. We went to one booth, a new artist to the event, who created these very interesting stainless steel sculptures that spun. They were really cool and I quietly told the artist "you've got a live one on your hands! Reel in the whale!" My date said, "which one do you like?" I pointed to one, and he bought it. Only $9K.

There are also always offers of trips, which again sounds good but after a half dozen dates, he wanted me to fly off somewhere with him. Jesus, I barely knew the guy and he barely knew me. He always seemed more concerned about my lack of availability (a common complaint) then about actually getting to know me.

What often also comes with these guys is a sense of entitlement; privledge that I find super annoying. You know the type; get seated in a restaurant but first has to look around to assess if there is a better table. As a former hostess, I find people like this intolerable.

Bottom line is I have plenty of money to be happy. I've had more money and been less happy than I am today. I don't need anyone to buy me happiness so dealing with this type of entitled person isn't something I have patience for.

There were certainly many others. I'm still seeing the young firefighter, doing my part to support the community's first responders. Not all heros wear capes. Double booked a few weekends ago, and made one date drive me to my next date. Hey, you only get one trip around the sun, as they say!

Well I have many blog topics I want to write about so I'll close this one before it gets too long. And, I'm once again double booked this afternoon so wish me luck!

I hope this finds you all enjoying this last part of the summer. It's going fast, my friends, and soon fall will be opon us. Enjoy it while it's here. I certainly am...

Be well, my friends. Until next time...

Bidding Adieu to a Wonderful Summer

Many of you have been questioning why there have not been any recent blogs. My answer to this is that I've simply been having too much fun on the weekends to write. Writing is something I do in my day job so taking away any "play time" on the weekends to write a blog just never seems like a good idea.

The summer has been full of tennis, music festivals, bike rides and just a whole lot of fun. Went to AND survived Lollapalooza with my daughter as well as the Hella Mega Tour with my son a few weeks later. I was so happy to be hearing live music again, definitely my happy place. All and all an amazing summer and sad to see it soon coming to a close.

Today, however, it's extremely soupy and hot out, giving me two options: cleaning my condo or writing a blog. Condo cleaning can wait!

Ben and I seeing Weezer, Fallout Boy and Green Day at Wrigley. Note: I'm wearing the shirt I bought him after taking him to his first Green Day show at 13.

Love Life Update

Not much in the way of an update. Jon and I are still enjoying each other's company, and next month we celebrate the one-year anniversary of our first date, which took place at the Hopleaf, one of my favorite local bars. To this day, Jon has my number saved in his phone as "Barb Hopleaf."

As you all know we met and started dating during the pandemic so I must say I did worry about what would happen when Jon--who is quite the snappy dresser--realized that my pandemic wardrobe and my schlubby chic normal wardrobe are sadly one and the same.  He seems to have dealt with that reality.

The year has flown by and we have had a lot of fun together. Lots of adventures and certainly more on tap. He is a very active guy so we are always doing something, although he definitely also enjoys activities that are not at the top of my list of fun things to do.

For one, he's a camper and while I love campfires, s'mores, hiking and being outside, the whole sleeping outside thing isn't my bag. I can hike until my legs are jelly, but at the end of the day I want clean sheets, a hot shower, and a meal I don't have to forage for. Period. Sadly, I know he hasn't given up trying to convince me to give it a try. "We don't sleep on the ground; we have cots." Oh boy!

While I know his intention is to alleviate my concerns, the last time I was on a cot was in the 6th grade when I was feigning a stomachache to get out of the long run in gym class. I don't remember enjoying it, although it did beat running.

Now, can I imagine a scenario in which I would willingly sleep on a cot...in a tent? Well, sure. But most of those scenarios involve the Red Cross and some type of natural disaster, like a tornado or hurricane (highly unlikely), or maybe a plane crash.

One of his trips over the winter, he and a group of equally nutty, but physically fit friends walked up a mountain in skis with skins on and all their gear for 8 miles!! I'm not even a fan of carrying my own suitcase. The end goal is a hut. A hut. Not a bougie hotel suite, but a hut. Backcountry skiing is the real reward.

For real, I would have made it maybe 2-3 miles before someone put me out of my misery. Our relationship could not have weathered the amount of bitching and complaining that would have been emanating from me.

Call me crazy, but I prefer skiing in areas where ski patrol can come rescue me, if needed, and where magical chairs take you to the top of the mountain. Not areas where you have to wear special devices to survive avalanches and where you have to walk uphill to get to the top.

They don't build them like they used to...

I might be in the market for a new washer/dryer. I truly hope you were all sitting for that shocking news. To be honest, I don't want to buy a new set as I am well aware that the appliances they make today don't hold a candle to the quality of the ones of yesteryear.

When my ex and I got married, we financed a washer/dryer set from Sears. When I moved out of the family house nearly 25 years later, both were still in perfect working condition. I gave them to a friend's son and his wife so they might still be washing and drying like champs. Update: my friend Mary reports they are still both functioning perfectly 32 years later.

When I moved into my condo, there was a rather old washing machine and dryer already there so I didn't rush to replace them. At one point the dryer started making an odd, clunking sound. Turns out of of its fins (probably not the technical term) on the inside had become detached and was flinging around. The screw to keep in place had fallen into the drum of the dryer so I just tore it off. Works like a charm again. Not a McGyver-esque fix, but it worked.

It's not that I can't afford a new pair, but why spend thousands to replace them with some space-age, computerized contraption that won't last a quarter of the time these other super-senior appliances do? I don't want a motherboard on my washing machine. I really don't need them to be "smart." Just like dogs, you don't want the smartest one. They are too much work. Same theory applies with appliances.

Washing and drying clothes is a very simple task. That's why the older models didn't break much; there wasn't much to break. Simple mechanics; no electronics, sensors, or microprocessors. I'm not asking it to  solve differential equations; I just want it to clean and dry my damn clothes. Have clothes become more complex? I don't want to me able to communicate with my washing machine.

Older ones are also much easier to operate. My current dryer offers me two options: Normal and Delicate modes. So my options are: hot or surface-of-the-sun hot. Easy peasy. Don't put anything in there that will shrink. Same with my washer. A few options but 90% of the time, I go with normal (warm wash/cool rinse). The newer ones offer a million different features, a myriad of different configurations to choose from. My clothes don't require any advanced settings.

I had a lot of friends who ran out and bought those front-loaders and then had to deal with mildew and other issues; there were class action lawsuits from furious owners. My mom bought a new fancy top loader a few years ago, which to this day I can't figure out how to operate, and it's so deep that she quite literally fell into it one night and couldn't get out!!! Fortunately she eventually escaped it; thankfully she's a nimble and athletic old lady.

When she finally liberated herself, she came up excitedly to tell my dad what has just happened. His response was, "well, thank God you got yourself out of there, because I have no idea where the camera is and I would have had to find that first before I came down to help." Image below is her demonstrating what happened. Notice the stool.

Ok, well this is getting long so ciao for now, but sadly the weather will soon turn and as a result, I'm sure there will be more blogs to come.

Hope all of you are well and let's enjoy what's left of summer.

Warmest and sweatiest regards,

Barb
